Tori Spelling, known for her role as Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210, welcomed the New Year with her children at the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa in Southern California on December 31.
She shared the photo on Instagram, with the caption:
“The kiddos and I were so excited to continue our family tradition since my oldest were babies. Love you @lakearrowheadresortandspa! My parents used to bring my brother and I here growing up. I wanted my kids to continue that tradition. I can’t wait for my kids to bring their kids here one day!”
What should have been perceived as a sweet family snap was heavily discussed as Spelling’s estranged husband, Dean McDermott, revealed he was suffering from pneumonia while the family was celebrating.
The couple is currently in the midst of a highly-publicized separation, a story that has been making the rounds since Spelling first revealed she and McDermott were unable to sleep in the same room anymore.
Their relationship has had considerable ups and downs over the years, but it seems as though this was the final straw for the actress.
A Controversial Start
Spelling met McDermott on the set of the Canadian made-for-TV movie they were working on together in July 2005.
At the time, Spelling was married to actor and writer Charlie Shanian and McDermott to Candanian actress Mary Jo Eustace.
McDermott and Spelling began an affair the same night they met, which Spelling discussed in her 2009 memoir, sTORI Telling.
Spelling recounted the stressful experience of telling her former husband that she had cheated in the book.
“I told him that I’d never been in love with him. I loved him and he’d been a friend to me, but I married him because he was a great guy, a guy who took care of me.”she wrote, “Charlie didn’t want to hear it, he kept saying, ‘Where’s all this coming from? We have a perfect relationship.’ Then he turned to me. ‘Did you cheat on me?’ I said yes. He said, ‘It was with Dean, wasn’t it?’ I said yes. He said, ‘I should have known.’”
She and Shanain separated in October that year, and she married McDermott after her divorce was finalized in 2006.
The couple married in a private ceremony in Fiji, renewing their vows four years later in Beverly Hills.
The overlapping relationships made headlines after the birth of the couple’s first son, Liam, in 2007.
McDermott and Spelling share five children; three sons, Liam, Finn, and Beau, and two daughters, Stella and Hattie.
Spelling has been vocal about her complicated pregnancies, having been diagnosed with placenta previa and suffered bleeding while pregnant with Hattie.
The couple decided to renew their vows in 2010 after a clip of their reality show, Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood, aired an argument the couple had been having, during which Spelling angrily told McDermott:
“I just want the old Dean back. I really do. I miss you so much.”
The 2013 Cheating Scandal
In December 2013, Us Weekly broke the news that McDermott had cheated on Spelling with a 28-year-old woman he met during a gig where he had been working as the host of Chopped Canada in Toronto.
Emily Goodhand, the woman he met through friends, told Us:
“He told me he and Tori had a sexless marriage,” says Goodhand, who stayed over at his hotel the following night too. “I believed him.”
Spelling decided to cope with the news of her husband’s infidelity by airing out the drama on national television.
In a series entitled True Tori, the couple filmed their couple’s therapy sessions, with McDermott revealing he was suicidal on-air.
He checked into a facility after the episode was aired in 2014.
Unpaid Credit Cards & Police Calls
After reconciling, Spelling and McDermott once again made headlines in 2016 when it was revealed the pair owed American Express $39,000 in unpaid credit card bills.
Two years later, the LAPD was called to the couple’s home three times over nine days, with no proof of a crime or any incident of domestic violence.
The police were called to a restaurant where the couple and their children were after the paparazzi refused to let them leave in peace.
2021 – Spelling And McDermott Separate
Spelling was photographed without her wedding band in early 2021, and neither she nor McDermott acknowledged their fifteenth wedding anniversary that May.
In June, a source told Us that Spelling and her husband had been struggling to keep the relationship afloat for over a year and that she decided to handle the matter privately because
“Tori knows her kids see what she says online, so for her to say something publicly means the end could be very near.”
Spelling and her children posed with McDermott for a holiday card in November, a fact people were confused about amidst the separation rumors.
As far as the New Year’s Eve spa trip goes, some have been speculating that McDermott told his family to go on without him, while others have been berating Spelling from keeping her children away from their father while he was suffering.
The former couple chooses to keep their issues out of the press for their children’s sake.
“Marriages with five children need to have a lot of trust, love and understanding,” a source told People. “Without that, little things add up and a big thing could collapse everything.”
Tori Spelling Net Worth
Spelling has a cumulative net worth of $1.5 million, which she earned through her television appearances and multiple books.
Her father, legendary producer Aaron Spelling, left her with an impressive inheritance from his $500 million estate after his death.
The inheritance was set to be distributed between Spelling, her brother Randy, and their mother Candy.
Since she and her mother were estranged, Spelling received just $800,000, resulting in a lengthy public battle between mother and daughter.
Randy also received the same amount despite remaining close to his mother.
Candy did agree to establish a trust fund for Spelling’s oldest child, Liam, setting aside $10 million of his grandfather’s inheritance.
