TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Recently, live broadcasts of people bathing in mud have gained much popularity in social media, especially TikTok. In Indonesia, the trend has started to attract elderly women who are believed to be persuaded by their children.

The trend has caught the attention of Social Minister Tri Rismaharani who implied there might be legal repercussions for people who force and exploit their elderly-citizen parents to "beg" for money through TikTok live stream.

"Suspects could be arrested. I think there are Laws overseeing it," said Social Minister Rismaharani on Friday, January 13, 2023, as quoted by Antaranews. She also implied that authorities have been noted regarding this troubling trend.

Reports have widely circulated regarding a number of accounts on TikTok conducting live broadcasts of mud baths to receive gifts from viewers. Unfortunately, these live sessions often involve parents trying to take advantage of people's compassion - and gifts - from other online users.

One of the ‘Mud Bath’ accounts on the Chinese social media platform is @intan_komalasari92, which claims to be the child of the perpetrator of the live broadcast. The account’s live broadcast has enraged fellow TikTok users who often use the comment section to notify authorities.
