TEMPO.CO, Madrid - Former Real Madrid forward Alfredo Di Stefano, 88, one of the greatest footballers of all time, has died in the Spanish capital two days after suffering a heart attack.

Di Stefano was rushed to an emergency room in Gregorio Maranon hospital, Madrid, last Saturday.  His death has been confirmed by Santiago Bernabeau.

The Argentine-born was known as 'La Saeta Rubia' (blond arrow) because of his speed.  He helped the club win five successive European Cups between 1956-60, eight Primera Spanish League, one time Copa del Rey and Intercontinental Cup.

He was crowned best player in Europe in 1957 and 1959.  He retired in 1966 at the age of 40 and ended his 22 years of career.  In the national team, he had defended Argentina, Colombia and Spain.
