The Las Vegas Raiders will interview former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy for their vacant offensive coordinator position Friday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Getsy, 39, spent seven seasons on the Green Bay Packers' staff as an offensive quality control coach, wide receivers coach, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator before serving as Chicago's OC from 2022 through 2023.
Antonio Pierce, who took over as the Raiders' interim head coach last season after the firing of Josh McDaniels, is putting his staff in place in the wake of having the interim tag removed.
Bears head coach Matt Eberflus brought in Getsy as his OC when he was hired in 2022, and the results were mixed throughout two seasons.
In Getsy's first campaign, the Bears ranked 23rd in the NFL in scoring and 28th in total offense, but they made strides in 2023, ranking 18th in scoring and 20th in total offense.
Perhaps the most impressive part of the improvements made by the Chicago offense this season was the fact that it happened even with starting quarterback Justin Fields missing four games due to injury.
Undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent started four games in Fields' absence, and the Bears still managed to finish around the middle of the pack offensively.
After going just 3-14 in 2022, the Bears improved to 7-10 in 2023, and Fields' play was a big reason why, as he set career bests in completion percentage (61.4 percent) and passing yardage (2,562 yards), while also throwing 16 touchdown passes and a career-low nine interceptions.
Shortly before getting injured in October, Fields enjoyed a two-game stretch that saw him throw for 617 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception, which showcased the potential of Getsy's offense.
Getsy also helped get career years out of wide receiver D.J. Moore and tight end Cole Kmet. Moore set personal marks across the board with 96 receptions for 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns, and Kmet set new career highs with 73 catches for 719 yards, plus he scored six times.
If Getsy gets the OC role in Las Vegas, he will have a big job ahead of him, as the Raiders ranked 27th in total offense and 23rd in scoring offense this season.
Poor quarterback play was a big reason why, as veteran Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 1,205 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions in seven games before giving way to rookie fourth-round pick Aidan O'Connell.
O'Connell played well for a mid-round rookie, throwing for 2,218 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven picks, but it is unclear if he will get a shot at the starting job.
The Raiders are a prime candidate to go after a veteran starting quarterback in free agency or via trade such as Kirk Cousins or Russell Wilson.
Regardless of who the quarterback is, Getsy would be tasked with getting the most out of offensive weapons such as wide receivers Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers, plus tight end Michael Mayer, and either Josh Jacobs or Zamir White at running back depending on whether Jacobs re-signs.
The Raiders have some good pieces in place offensively, but their success on that side of the ball in 2024 will depend largely on quarterback play and the hiring decision at OC.
