The New York Mets have a surplus of catchers that could allow them to make a trade and address other areas of need on the roster.
Per Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets have indicated to other teams they are "open" to moving Omar Narváez.
Puma added Narváez "would welcome" a change of scenery that affords him the opportunity to get more regular playing time.
Narváez will earn $7 million in 2024 after picking up his player option in November. He originally signed with the Mets in December 2022 and began last season as their starting catcher, but a calf strain suffered early in the year landed him on the injured list.
The Mets called up top prospect Francisco Álvarez to take Narváez's spot on the roster when he went down.
Álvarez struggled through his rookie season with a .209/.284/.437 slash line, but he hit the second-most homers of any player at the position. He will be the starter going into 2024 and should be given every opportunity to improve as a hitter because the upside is tremendous.
Tomás Nido is entering his eighth season with the Mets, though he's been used primarily as a backup. The 29-year-old has only played in 274 games since 2017. He was designated for assignment on June 5 when Narváez returned from the IL.
After clearing waivers, Nido was sent down to the minors where he hit .273/.323/.393 in 43 games. He is set to earn $2.1 million this season.
Narváez has bounced around the league since making his MLB debut in 2016. He's spent time with the Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers before joining the Mets.
The 31-year-old made the NL All-Star team in 2021 with the Brewers. He hit .266/.342/.402 with 11 homers in 123 games.
