Personal Statement

I am Kristin Hammel, a 5" 8" track and field athlete from Champaign, Illinois, and will graduate in May 2013.  I have been on the varsity track and field team the last three years and have competed in pole vault at the state meet all three years and also competed in the lead leg of the 4x200 meter relay at State in 2012.  My specialties include pole vault, 100 and 300 meter hurdles, and sprints.  I love to compete both as an individual and as a member of a team.  My competitiveness began when I was eight, as that is when I first started competing in gymnastics - vault, beam, uneven bars and floor.  I learned many lessons from my six years of gymnastics, such as self confidence, time management, goal setting, overcoming fears, plus gained strength and agility.  The lessons have carried over into my school work, as I am an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society at Champaign Central, and I take as many accellerated classes as I can.  I have also participated in volleyball (varsity for two years and Big 12 Champion in 2012) and varsity cross country in high school.

I am looking for a college that has a strong science curriculum, as I would like to pursue a career in health sciences.  I have an interest in exercise science, health science or pre-physical therapy programs. I believe my participation in college-level track and field would enhance my studies in both anatomy and psychology.

Thank you.  Kristin Hammel
