TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo inaugurated the multi-function stadium, Indonesia Arena, in Gelora Bung Karno Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta on Monday, August 7, 2023. The 37,200 square-meter arena was built with the intention to host the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.
"Today, we officiate Indonesia Arena, a 16,000-capacity stadium built with an Rp640 billion budget," said Jokowi in his opening remarks.
The development of Indonesia Arena began in December 2021 and was finalized in June 2023.
Previously, the arena has been used to host Indonesia International Basketball Invitational on August 2-5, 2023. The basketball event was participated by Indonesia, Syria, and UAE.
Jokowi relayed that the arena could be used for various sports, such as basketball, volleyball, and badminton. Jokowi also hoped the arena could host other events outside of sports. "I'm certain this arena will be utilized for concerts more times than sports," he said.
The inauguration of Indonesia Arena was attended by several related ministers, the Acting Governor of Jakarta Heru Budi Hartomo, representatives from the Indonesian Basketball Association, and the FIBA World Cup Ambassador Cinta Laura.
