With everyone vying for thick, voluminous lashes, it's no surprise that eyelash extensions have become all the rage. "Eyelash extensions have become extremely popular," says lash artist Nadia Afanaseva. "It has become part of a lot of [people's] beauty regimen. The beauty of professional eyelash extensions is the variety of lash effects that beautify and complement your natural features."
Yet despite the undeniable lash-lengthening results that make extensions so covetable, this beauty enhancement comes with its fair share of costs and maintenance. So if you're debating whether professional lash extensions are a good investment for you, and how much they'll set you back, you've come to the right place. We turned to Afanseva and lash pro Lindsay Ford to find out everything you need to know about eyelash extension costs, ahead.
Meet the expert
- Nadia Afanaseva is a celebrity eyelash and brow expert and founder of Eye Design New York.
- Lindsay Ford is the marketing manager of Bella Lash.
What Are Eyelash Extensions?
Lash extensions are semi-permanent fibers that are adhered to each natural lash to create a longer, fuller-looking lash line. While they're often considered a more durable form of false lashes, they differ in that they are applied to the individual lash strands rather than directly to the eyelid skin.
Eyelash Extension Costs
Since it's truly a customizable experience, the total cost of your extensions depends on a few different variables. According to Afanaseva, the price of lash extensions can range anywhere from $200 to $500.
"At Eye Design New York we have multiple levels of technicians," Afanaseva tells us."[It depends] on experience and speed of the procedure performed, as well as the style of lashes the client would prefer." Generally, the more detailed look you want, the more expensive your bill will be. Eye Design New York even provides a signature style called the "Kim's effect," which will cost you about $500 if you book with a top-level technician.
Make sure to arrive at your lash appointment with clean eyelashes if you're looking to save on time and money. Since your lash artist cannot apply extensions to dirty or makeup-covered lashes, they may charge for an add-on cleaning service if needed, notes Ford.
How to Prolong Eyelash Extensions
According to Afanaseva, there are some tricks to make your extensions last a bit longer. For starters, lash refills can extend the lifecycle of eyelash extensions by only filling in gaps and sparse areas rather than completely removing the existing extensions and applying a fresh set. They typically last for about two weeks.
Afanaseva also shares a few no-nos when wearing lash extensions. "No sleeping on your face, no oil base products on extension, and no rubbing of the eyes," she says. By following best practices, Afanaseva tells us that some of her clients end up wearing their extensions for at least two months.
How to Apply Eyelash Extensions
As tempting as it may be to attempt to put on lash extensions at home, Afanaseva strongly advises against it. While extensions aren't cheap, the pro of going to the salon is that you are getting a safe application and quality extensions that will last. Knowing how to properly apply your own extensions can be tricky, and if you're a first-timer, it could cause damage and irritation to your eyes. If getting to the salon is tricky, Afanaseva recommends waiting rather than attempting the application on your own. Simply consider it an excuse to let the lashes breathe.
"As professionals, we strongly advise not to try to apply for lash extensions at home, unless you are licensed to do so because the eyes are a very sensitive area and it can cause serious eye damage and or allergies," she says.
The Final Takeaway
At the end of the day, if you're looking to get thick and long lashes quickly and safely, extensions may be for you. But if the cost outweighs the pros of convenient, voluminous lashes, you may want to stick to your tried-and-true favorite tube of mascara or falsies.
