Former Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich reportedly "hasn't received a call" from Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni regarding the team's vacancy at offensive coordinator, according to Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press.
The pair worked together on the San Diego Chargers' coaching staff for three years, with Reich serving as quarterbacks coach (2013) and offensive coordinator (2014-15) and Sirianni an offensive quality control coach (2013) and quarterbacks coach (2014-15).
Reich then hired Sirianni to be his offensive coordinator with the Colts between the 2018-20 seasons before Sirianni took the Eagles' head-coaching gig.
As Maaddi noted, Sirianni considers Reich a "mentor."
Sirianni now finds himself in need of both a new offensive and defensive coordinator after a disastrous end to the 2023 season. Reich would be a natural fit on the offensive side, given his past connections to both Sirianni and the Eagles (he served as the team's offensive coordinator under Doug Pederson between the 2016-17 seasons, helping lead the Birds to their first Super Bowl title).
The Eagles will have to make a tough decision about whether Reich would actually be an upgrade, however, given some of his rough recent seasons:
2023: As head coach of the Carolina Panthers, his offense ranked 31st in points and 32nd in yards and Bryce Young struggled immensely in his rookie season.
2022: His Colts finished 27th in yards and 30th in points and he was fired after a 3-5-1 start to the season.
2021: His Colts finished ninth in points and 16th in yards but went 9-8 and missed the playoffs after missing the last two games of the season, including the season finale against the 3-14 Jacksonville Jaguars.
Now, some of this deserves context. In 2023, he had a rookie quarterback and a talent-deficient roster. In 2022, he shuffled between Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger and Nick Foles at quarterback. In 2021, the erratic Carson Wentz was under center.
In the two years he made the playoffs in Indianapolis, he had Andrew Luck and Philip Rivers at quarterback. In 10 total seasons as a head coach or offensive coordinator, his offenses have finished top-10 in yards and points four times.
Wentz's best years were under Reich in Philadelphia, while Rivers turned back the clock and had a solid final year of his career paired with Reich. Could he help Jalen Hurts get back on track after a surprising 20-turnover season?
There have been reports that Hurts and former offensive coordinator Brian Johnson didn't see eye-to-eye at times this past season, and it wouldn't be shocking if Sirianni at least consulted with his franchise quarterback before making his next offensive coordinator hire.
It just remains to be seen if either are interested in bringing Reich back to Philadelphia.
