Heston named president of NRA

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) -- Two days after assailing President Clinton's character and views on guns, Charlton Heston on Monday was elected the new president of the National Rifle Association. The actor who played Moses in "The Ten Commandments" and won an Oscar for his role in "Ben Hur" said he will work to improve the image of the NRA.

His election follows comments Saturday targetting President Clinton. "Mr. Clinton, sir, America didn't trust you with our health care system. America didn't trust you with gays in the military. America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns," Heston said.

Stones get no satisfaction from British tax laws

LONDON (CNN) -- The Rolling Stones say they're calling off the British leg of their world tour because of government tax reforms there. The group says the four planned shows would have cost them $20 million and made their entire European tour a money-losing venture, The Times reported.

The new tax laws, which took effect in March, are designed to close a loophole that allowed British residents working abroad to earn money tax-free. If the four British shows were to go ahead, the group would have to pay tax on earnings from the entire Bridges to Babylon European tour, the newspaper said.

Lynns say mom warned them of pitfalls

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Patsy and Peggy Lynn, up for two awards at this week's TNN Music City News Country Awards, say their famous mom, Loretta Lynn, never pushed them into the spotlight. "My mother didn't exactly have dreams of us doing this," Patsy Lynn says in the June 13 issue of TV Guide. "She knew all the pitfalls." The Lynns, 33, have been nominated for Star of Tomorrow-Female and Star of Tomorrow-Vocal Duo awards. The TNN awards air on June 15.

The mega-flick about the 1912 disaster, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet will be available on video on September 1, Twentieth Century Fox and Paramount Pictures announced Monday. "Titanic" has grossed more than $581 million at the domestic box-office and still maintains top-10 status on the box office charts after more than 25 weeks in theaters. It also won 11 Academy Awards earlier this year, including best picture.
