LONDON (CNN) -- The final stage of Princess Diana's funeral concluded Saturday with a private burial on her family estate in Northamptonshire, where a private burial was held.
The cortege left Westminster Abbey shortly after the funeral service ended. The coffin's second public procession took a winding route of nearly 80 miles (128 km) to Althorp Park to allow still more people to bear witness to the event.
Diana's remains were buried on an island on the estate grounds.
Earlier, Diana's coffin was taken on a two-hour procession through London, where hundreds of thousands of people lined the route. Millions more watched the televised processional and the funeral service, which was attended by the royal and Spencer families and friends of the princess.
The town of Great Brington, England, has been home to Spencers since 1508. The Spencer estate includes a 16th century mansion on 8,500 acres of lush countryside dotted with sheep.
Some 20 generations of Diana's ancestors, including the father she was devoted to, are buried at the nearby Church of St. Mary the Virgin. The family decided against burying her there out of concern the tranquil and tiny town of Great Brington would become a tourist Mecca.
