(Entertainment Weekly) -- War is hell on songwriters. Its drama demands their best.

Given that these pieces were written quickly after the participants viewed "We Were Soldiers," it's impressive that the heartfelt songs outnumber the indifferent ones.

Johnny Cash and Train offer individual perspectives, while Jars of Clay and Steven Curtis Chapman lapse into sentimentality.

Luckily, the poignant moments make this the most convincingly somber soundtrack since "Dead Man Walking."
