The Grammy winner went viral on Monday after Bad Bunny throw phone video showed him hurling a female fan’s phone into nearby water.
Following internet criticism after a video of him hurling a fan’s phone went viral over the holidays, Bad Bunny has finally responded to the video.
He’s now defending himself, stating he did it because she showed a “lack of respect” by trying to take a photo while he was going down the street while holding her phone in his face.
The video, which was filmed in the Dominican Republic, shows a flock of followers encircling Bunny as he makes his way down a street, and one female fan, in particular, steps in front of him with the front-facing camera open on her phone.
A bystander off-camera exclaims, “Wow!” as Bunny is seen snatching the object and throwing it off-camera into the distance. You have to respect his space; someone in Bunny’s staff says, “Really?”
The musician from Puerto Rico clarified his actions on Twitter in Spanish by writing, “I’ll always pay attention to and appreciate anyone who comes up to me, whether it’s to introduce themselves, tell me anything, or just to say hello. I will view anyone who comes to shove an f——— phone in my face as showing no respect, and I will handle them accordingly.”
Fans and online comments appeared to be split, with equal supporters and detractors. While some said he was correct to set boundaries, others believed the year’s top musician should have thought about his position and used words rather than acts.
People claimed that he had forgotten where he had come from, that he should have handled the situation more diplomatically, and that he had forgotten what it was like to be without the means to buy a new phone.
Despite indicating a hiatus, Bunny dropped a surprise song called “Gato de Noche” and gave an incredible performance in Puerto Rico on the roof of a gas station.
